To Blog or Not to Blog

blue_keyboardThat is the question, right?

It’s been a while since I last posted to this blog. Today I am beginning again. Perhaps this is the story of life itself. We try, we fail, and we begin again.

Never stop. Never give up.

My goal for this blog right now is to begin writing regularly again – about once per week. I am going to aim for Monday mornings, which is why I am posting this today. But it feels safer right now to commit to “about once per week” than “every Monday morning” – because my life is – like yours, I imagine – busy and unpredictable.

I have a number of articles in the works – some fully written and ready to post here, and some just barely drafted or conceived in my mind. Most of my posts will deal with teaching, learning, writing, and creativity. These topics remain important to me.

My long journey in formal education was based partly in all four of those things – teaching, learning, writing, and creativity. Part of my reason for spending 10 years or so studying books and literature was to prepare for a career in higher education (teaching), but another big part of it was the joy I found in learning and in writing my own stories and essays and in reading good books. Having read some of Hemingway makes me want to read all of Hemingway. Likewise for Jane Austen. Part of this is that I like to learn about people and their lives – both to understand them and to learn from them.

Somewhere along my educational journey I was infected with the learning bug. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn and the more I realized how little I knew. We all have a learning bug. We just don’t all want to learn the same things in the same ways or at the same time.

And there’s been a lot of writing in my education – required writing and non-required writing. I’ve done a lot of self-sponsored writing, which is the most enjoyable. I keep a journals. Writing itself involves creativity – at least in the way that I think of creativity.

Not all writing is equally creative. But all writing contains some elements of creativity: making the work original for its purpose.

Well, I won’t bore you with further ramblings in this post. There will be more ramblings in about a week, if all goes as planned. Thanks for reading. I would love to hear something from my readers, too. Feel free to comment in the post below or shoot me an email. Have a great day!
